‘New season, new you’, was the slogan for a retail fashion campaign I was involved with in a previous life. Back then, it referred to buying a new wardrobe. However, the message still resonates for me, particularly when I apply it to how we’re going to move through our new season, Spring.

Sure, Spring is associated with growth, beginnings, and ‘newness’. As I look around at the flowers in my garden that are starting to bloom, I can see new buds popping out and plants that are almost growing in front of my eyes.

And yet, the supporting act that doesn’t get any of the ‘top billing’ of this season, is care. These beautiful, coloured buds popping up around me are doing so because I care for them. Regularly, I feed, water, and prune them so they can live their best floral life, come Spring.

And what about us? What are we doing for our own self-care so that we, too, can pop up, grow, and live our best lives?

Ok, let’s get on the same page with ‘self-care’. What comes to mind when you hear ‘self-care’?

To me, self-care is the umbrella term for different ways to look after ourselves.

One aspect of self-care is ‘pampering’: a day at the spa, a bubble bath with beautifully scented candles all around…things we do that restore us, but we don’t do every day.

Another aspect of self-care are the fundamentals…things we do every day to promote and maintain our wellbeing.

For the record, there is a place for both – pampering and the fundamentals. I don’t think we should limit ourselves to either.

Wellbeing is more than just the absence of illness. Yes, it’s about what we eat, the quality of our sleep and getting exercise, but there are many contributors to our wellbeing: feeling safe in our homes, living in a fair and just society; positive relationships (personally and professionally), financial stability, finding meaning in our work and having a sense of purpose. And it’s about being able to meet the challenges of the moment.

And there are many challenging moments throughout the day, aren’t there? You do amazing work. And in order to continue to do well, it’s so important that YOU are well.

When it comes to self-care, I focus on four specific aspects of life to attend to regularly: our social, emotional, mental / cognitive, and physical mojo.
